The purpose of this study was twofold: to explore the compositional background/experiences and compositional processes of college composer teachers in Taiwan to develop a model for composition students, and to provide composition teachers with an opportunity to share their experiences with colleagues to advance the efficacy of composition teaching/learning.

Sixteen composers participated in this study. They were selected from the 1994 Yearbook of Composers in the Republic of China and the list of commissioned composers of the 1997 Keelung International Modern Music Festival. At the outset of each interview, the interviewer provided the same basic explanation to the participants. They then answered a list of questions relating to their compositional experience/backgrounds, processes, and pedagogy.

Results showed that (1) Learning composition requires a highly motivated spirit and perseverance. Listen--analyze--compose, listen--play--compose, receive stimulation--introspect--breakthrough, and sense/observe--imagine--express/create are the avenues leading to successful composition. (2) What and how an experienced composer does along each step of the compositional process can provide composition students with diverse approaches to composition. Nevertheless, mastery of composition relies on persistent effort and an accumulation of experience, and there is no standard compositional procedure for students to follow or to guarantee success. In short, all participants felt that composition students need to learn composition by composing. (3) Two commonalities emerged in exploring how the interviewees teach typical composition lessons: The sequence of a composition lesson was very similar from one interviewee to the next, and they all believe that learning techniques was important in the composition teaching and learning.
