Student retention is a major concern for most universities. Researchers have invested significant time and resources in identifying the factors that influence a students' ability to be successful and to remain in the university environment. Universities and colleges are dealing with substantial challenges posed by the health issues among their students. It is important for administrators, faculty, staff and students to understand the profound impact that health problems can have on all aspects of campus life, and to treat health issues as an institutional responsibility and priority.

This study proposed and tested a conceptual model that describes the effect of various health-related indicators that potentially influence freshman retention as assessed by GPA at four-year colleges. The research question in this study asked, what is the effect of health-related indicators on freshmen retention as measured by students' GPA at selected four-year institutions across the United States?
