Thesis (Ph.D.)--Rutgers The State University of New Jersey - New Brunswick, 1998.
The thesis deals with the ethical problems which accrue when a theory becomes preeminent or when the "ends" of paradigmatic form supercede consideration of the "means" necessary to bring that form to expression. In four novels, I examine the impulse which attempts to "justify" murder in the name of theory, in works which span realism, modernism and postmodernism. The ethical perspective comes from Mikhail Bakhtin's early work on ethics and answerability, which considers thought in terms of action or a sense that perceptual paradigms take on form in the world and become incarnate and relate to a "once-occurrent event of Being" in the life of the thinker and with those with whom he comes into contact. Bakhtin's ethics confronts the dichotomy between theory and practice--by considering theory as practice. The novels contextualize theory in a way which "concentrates, correlates and resolves within a unitary and unique and...final context both the sense and the fact, the universal and the individual, the real and the ideal" (Act 28).
