How do we sustain leadership learning with our front-line nursing leaders in Providence Health Care? This paper establishes the links between nursing leadership and quality patient care. It describes the impact of restructuring our current system on the health care environment. Through a participatory action research approach, the current role of the front-line leader is examined and the gaps associated with leadership development are identified. The paper explores leadership theories and developmental strategies and outlines some characteristics unique to health care organizations. A description of the components of a learning organization and their relationship to increasing and improving leadership capacity and sustainability is provided.
