Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Idaho, 1997.
Music educators have lacked a broad theoretical base on which to construct scope and sequence of music skills and concepts. This study utilized research results from neuroscience, psychology, and music to construct theory which served as the basis for a scope and sequence design for elementary general music.

The literature was searched to identify studies which were constructed in a manner that invited comparison. The focus of the comparisons centered around cognitive developmental considerations, particularly as they applied to music. Charts and graphs were constructed to correlate the results of the search.

Recent studies have related learning to brain growth and development. Numerous musical neuroscience studies relate a particular brain structure or system to a specific music function or skill. Findings from these studies were compiled into a model of the musical brain. The model was designed for quick reference by teachers, utilizing nontechnical language, numerous illustrations, and a glossary.

From the musical brain model, developmental considerations emerged that established parameters for decisions regarding scope and sequence for teaching musical skills and concepts. A Scope and sequence design was constructed and applied to the creation of music resource materials for grades K-5. The application chosen as the focus of the resource materials was handchime instruments.
