Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Kansas, 2006.
This study provides a beginning understanding of a communicative theory of the coming out process. Specifically, it examines conversations where lesbian, gay, bisexual, or questioning (LGBQ) individuals disclose their non-heterosexual orientation to one or more persons. Through qualitative narrative inquiry research, questions regarding the content of coming out conversations, the positive and negative aspects of these conversations, and their overall effect on relationships are explored. Ninety-one diverse LGBQ research participants each shared two narratives, one considered to be negative and one considered to be positive. From these narratives, seven distinct coming out conversation types are noted; a general process for coming out conversations is provided; practical understandings of wanted and unwanted communicative behavior in coming out conversations are explored; and the various relational results of the narratives are examined. Ultimately, the study provides a grounded theory of coming out conversations and their relational impact, and seeks to begin increased inquiry into the understudied world of LGBQ interpersonal communication.
