The purpose of this study was to describe the organizational culture of a linguistically diverse school that provides for the academic achievement of low-income Hispanic English Language Learners (ELLs). The organizational culture as experienced by the administrative, teaching and classified employees of the school was be examined. A case study was implemented to conduct the research. Portraiture, defined by Lawrence-Lightfoot and Davis (1997) as a qualitative inquiry method that results in a complex and subtle narrative, guided the research and subsequent report of the findings. The school research site was selected based on its composition of a low-income Hispanic English Language Learner population of 80% or more coupled with a pattern of growth in Academic Performance Indicator (API) points over a four-year period of time.

Edgar Schein's theory of organizational culture was applied to the study to assess the organizational culture of the school. The three elements of Schein's theory are artifacts, espoused values and beliefs, and underlying assumptions. Those elements were examined during the study. Data was collected through participant observations and interviews of the administrative, teaching and classified staff members of the school research site. In addition, pertinent documents were analyzed to provide more data regarding the organizational culture of the school.

The findings of the study show that academic achievement is enhanced when educators embrace and value low-income Hispanic ELL students as individuals for their cultural heritage, native language and family background. Furthermore, when a school and community are viewed as one in support of students and their families, a strong school organizational culture can be established to serve the students and families well.
