The purpose of this study was to determine the validity of such tests by examining the relationship between a reproduction (sung) tonal memory test and various recognition (written) tests of tonal memory. Additional questions of the study addressed the role of singing experience in the relationship between recognition and reproduction tests of tonal memory.

To facilitate the gaining of insight into the research questions, a cross-sectional design using 210 fifth- through twelfth grade choral music students in the Hoopeston Area Community Schools was employed. All students were administered the following recognition tonal memory tests: tonal memory section of the Seashore Tests of Musical Talents (Series B), the memory section of the Wing Standardised Tests of Musical Intelligence, the Norris Test of Pitch Retention and Discrimination and the tonal imagery section of the Gordon Musical Aptitude Profile. Additionally, each subject was administered a reproduction or sung measure, the Mowrer Test of Tonal Memory

Analysis of data via Pearson product moment correlations indicated moderate relationships between each of the recognition measures and the reproduction measure (coefficients ranging from .47-Gordon to .66-Seashore). A stepwise multiple regression analysis revealed a moderately strong predictive relationship between a combination of the Seashore, Norris, and Wing recognition measures and the Mowrer reproduction test (R = .73, R2 = .53). Further analysis of correlation coefficients by grade level indicated that the relationship between the two genres of tests is fairly stable and does not significantly change over time as the scores on all of the tests tend to rise over the course of one's involvement in the school music program.

Under the limitation of lack of randomization, it was concluded that the reproduction test of tonal memory appears to possess moderately high concurrent/construct validity with certain recognition tests of tonal memory. However, the creation of a recognition measure with a stronger relationship to a reproduction test was suggested as a more reliable alternative to reproduction testing in light of the hazards of administering and scoring such a measure in a non-biased fashion.
