How do you create a productive outdoor roof space to benefit the practices and mandates of a not-for-profit organization? Meeting evolving eco-hostel practices with sustainable and self-sufficient urban agriculture production are some of the considerations Hostelling International Manitoba Region is facing with its move to an expanded downtown Winnipeg premise. Through the use of landscape architecture, a research framework will be established to compare and assess options and lessons learned from existing urban agriculture, roof garden, green roof and eco-hostel case studies and literature reviews on historical precedents. The results will be used to inform the design, development, and maintenance of the Hostelling International Manitoba Region roof garden.
