This study is a secondary analysis of an existing data set. A total of 40 adolescents with schizophrenia and their family were drawn from the study of self-management therapy for youth with schizophrenia. The original study was a randomized, two-group, experimental design with four repeated measures. Information from parents and adolescents with schizophrenia were used for analysis. Exploratory analysis, General estimating equation (GEE), and multilevel modeling with SAS PROC MIXED, full maximum likelihood method were used.

Of the 40 parents of adolescents with schizophrenia, 34 respondents were female (85%). The mean age was 46.08 years (SD=4.60), and 23 (57.5%) were Caucasian.

The early signs and symptoms in adolescents with schizophrenia decreased over time, but it was not statistically significant. Daily hassles significantly predicted early signs and symptoms in adolescents over time after controlling time, baseline early sign of symptoms, and the length of illness. Adolescents reported more hassles and less early sign and symptoms compared to those of parents. Adolescents' level of functioning statistically decreased over time. In particular, family functioning was strongly associated with adolescents functioning impairment after controlling time, baseline adolescents functioning, symptoms in adolescents with schizophrenia.
