Thesis (M.S.)--University of Massachusetts Lowell, 2003.
The objective of this project was to study the epoxy resins used in LED technology. Three epoxy resins were chosen in the experiment: D.E.R.-331 was a bisphenol A type epoxy resin, Eporite-5630 was a bisphenol A type epoxy resin modified with an antioxidant, and ERL-4221 was a cyclo-aliphatic epoxy resin. The curing agent was MHHPA and the catalyst was TBAB. Thermal, mechanical, electrical, and optical properties of the cured D.E.R.-331, Eporite-5630, and ERL-4221 were studied. It was found that ERL-4221 had outstanding UV resistance. But other properties of the cured ERL-4221 system were decreased due to the internal stress generated during the curing process. D.E.R.-331 showed better thermal stability, but the aromatic groups in the main chains caused photo-oxidation. Eporite-5630 has the advantages of D.E.R.-331 and better UV resistance than D.E.R.-331 because of the addition of antioxidant. Among the three materials, it was concluded that Eporite-5630 was the best choice of the balance properties for LED applications. This finding would assist in the modified system of epoxy resins used in the LED technology.
