This study examines the role of career portfolios in new graduate hiring within Atlantic Canada. To be eligible for this study, student participants must have been enrolled in one of the following undergraduate programs: Bachelor of Business Administration, Bachelor of Education, Bachelor of Science in Human Nutrition, or Bachelor of Science in Nursing at the University of Atlantic Canada (UAC)1. Atlantic Canadian university career services, university senior administration, employers, and UAC students responded to a questionnaire comprised of open-ended and ranked questions. The questions were designed to capture participants' opinions of student career readiness, the transition from school-to-work, and portfolio development. In addition, employers were asked to comment on their recruitment and retention of new graduates within their organization.

Using qualitative methods to gather the data, the results from the portfolio development and career readiness components of the study support the existing literature in the field. These results also confirm the value of portfolios as a tool to enhance self-discovery and self-awareness. In addition, based on the results it is evident that career portfolios can be a useful tool to capture and organize the learning that students experience throughout their university experiences. Furthermore, portfolios can be used as a recruitment tool in the hiring process of new graduates. Results from this study indicate that more research into portfolios is needed in each of the academic programs targeted for this study. Studying specific academic program and employer requirements will add much needed knowledge to the field.
