Sophocles' "Antigone": An exploration of modern and contemporary versions.
- 55 p.
Adviser: Frank Rutledge.
Thesis (M.A.)--Michigan State University, 2007.
Six versions of Antigone are studied to demonstrate how recent playwrights have used Sophocles' rendition of the ancient Greek myth as a vehicle to express their own congruent but dissimilar ideas. The Burial at Thebes by Seamus Heaney and Antigone by Jean Cocteau re-tell Sophocles' play. The two versions of Antigone , one by Jean Anouilh and another by Bertolt Brecht, uniquely adapt Sophocles' play while still following the framework of his dramatic action. Athol Fugard's The Island and A.R. Gurney's Another Antigone use Sophocles' Antigone as inspiration from which they create their own unique stories.
