Thesis (Ph.D.)--Temple University, 2007.
Community-based public health is the process of implementing initiatives designed to address needs and assets that can demonstrate improvement in the overall health and well-being of communities. Essential to this process is the effective and efficient use of resources such that the overall cost of health care is reduced while improving the quality of life of its citizens (Kaleida Health, 2004). Social Capital is becoming a core concept in the public health arena. It has been seen as critical to civil society, which is in turn a requirement of modern democracy. Where higher levels of social capital exist, there are fewer psychological and physical illnesses. The involvement in faith institutions has been identified as an important source of social capital (Putnam, 2000); however, limited scholarly research has been dedicated specifically to this arena.

Open-ended semi-structured interviews, focus groups, and survey data were used to explore the influence of faith institutions on community health in the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania area, and to assess the function of faith-based groups and their contribution to social capital. The theories of Religion, Social Networks and Social Supports, Social Capital, and the Behavioral Ecological Model were used as a framework for interview and survey questions.

A total of five-hundred fifty four individuals from diverse Baptist churches participated in the study. Results revealed that the participating churches are major contributors to the health of the community in terms of social, emotional, physical, educational, and spiritual well-being. They have an enormous repository of social capital embedded specifically in the ministries offered to support the mission. These physical and social factors are determinants of well-being, which could lead to a more comprehensive approach to health promotion. It also provides greater insight for potential resources that can be tapped by practitioners. The results contribute significantly to the field of public health, and could have major encouraging influences on the process in which social services are delivered in our country.
