Word order in Imperial Aramaic has been called 'free' and has not been adequately described in previous studies. The study attempts to explain the varied clause-level orders in narratives of Biblical and Imperial Aramaic. An examination of word order in Old Aramaic inscriptions, Qumran Aramaic and the Antiochus Scroll provide a historical perspective for the linguistic processes.

A linguistic model was chosen and developed in order to explain the complex data. Functional Grammar as developed by Simon Dik was chosen as the starting point. The model was expanded, particularly in the pragmatic realm, from observations and analyses that are used in discourse grammar and textlinguistic approaches. The resulting model included the functions of Foreground and Background and various kinds of Topic marking.

The clausal word order of Imperial Aramaic can be described as based on the following pattern: P1-Pn Verb Subject Object P2. P1 is a special pragmatic position and Pn allows for secondary pragmatic expansions. P2 is used for verbs in some Background constructions. The basic pattern is thus VSO and the Imperial dialect is structurally closer to earlier and later dialects than had been previously thought.

Questions about dialect development in Aramaic were discussed. Imperial Aramaic is shown to result from external influence from Akkadian (not Persian). Later dialects like Syriac and Jewish Palestinian Aramaic do not reflect word-order development from Imperial Aramaic but reflect the influence of spoken dialects that never left the strict P1VSO syntax of Old Aramaic.
