Thesis (Ph.D.)--York University (Canada), 2007.
This thesis examines the influence of Third World decolonization and revolutionary nationalism on the intellectual thought of four French Canadian writers---Hubert Aquin, Gaston Miron, Jacques Ferron, and Pierre Vallieres---in Quebec in the 1960s. At a time when the French Canadian identity was in flux, each of these four writers used, adapted, and refashioned the ideas and discourses of Third World decolonization to radically reimagine the French Canadian identity, firmly situating it in the camp of other colonized and decolonizing peoples of the world. In doing so, they engaged with the broader decolonizing world to make the French Canadian identity better suited to the international political context of the 1960s: that of Third World revolutionary independence struggles. Ultimately, this thesis argues that the discourse of decolonization contributed to the emergence of the Quebecois identity, and that writers played a crucial role in this process.
