The students' written responses and interviews were analyzed for reading strategies and compared to those identified and discussed in previous research studies on gender and reading. The methods of the professor teaching the course were also analyzed.

Four students--two males, two females--were studied for a semester in a college writing course. Students completed the following: reader-response papers, three formal papers that were based on their earlier reader responses, and a final paper in which they described their reading process. Students were also interviewed during the semester and asked to discuss their personal histories, reading interests, and previous writing courses.

Findings. The students' responses either contradicted or illustrated the gender differences found in previous studies. In the two female students' responses, additional reading strategies emerged. Other variables influencing reading were also found in all of the responses. Among them were cultural, ethnic, and socio-economic differences. Further analysis showed a relationship between the professor's teaching methods and the positive changes that occurred in students' reading strategies over the semester. Even though there were contradictions in this study, the responses of these students help to further confirm that males and females use different reading strategies.

Research implications. A larger sample of students needs to be studied to establish more conclusive claims about the relationship between gender and reading. And the influence of variables other than gender need to be investigated. And if female reading strategies produce competent readers, teaching implications need to be considered.
