Self awareness and its connection to survival in chaos.
McDonald, Catherine Anne.
Self awareness and its connection to survival in chaos.
- 90 p.
Adviser: Peter Norman.
Thesis (M.A.)--Royal Roads University (Canada), 1999.
Not only are emergency nurses expected to meet widely diverse external as well as internal expectations; but they are faced with meeting a tremendous number of simultaneous needs by making rapid clinical judgements, many of which could have life threatening consequences. The tremendous duress under which many of these decisions have to be made is inherent to the environment. As emergency departments continue to bulge with admitted patients who cannot access filled hospital beds, and an increasing number of people utilise the emergency department as either a primary source of health care or to expedite access to care, the added pressures have become intolerable for many.

Is it possible to develop cognitive skills that could enhance personal survival in this crisis laden environment; and could some of these cognitive skills be externalized to strengthen communication with others within the workplace? If these things are possible, could they ultimately help us all grow together in the direction of positive change? The intent of this project is to evolve a dynamic process through which these issues could be explored. This process has been designed to generate an examination of self and others and consequently determine the value of this exercise in the preparation of emergency nurses to prosper personally and professionally in their very unique environment. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)
