The purpose of this descriptive study was to determine if there was a difference in attitudes toward elderly persons between 23 male and 42 female beginning nursing student in one diploma school of nursing. Summary statistics were used to describe the variables of age, sex, past working experience with elderly persons, and past living experience with elderly persons. Mean scores for male and female beginning nursing students on the Kogan Attitudes toward Old People scale revealed positive attitudes toward elderly people in both groups. A t test performed on these mean scores revealed a t value of 0.27 which was not significant at the 0.05 level. Mean scores for male and female beginning nursing students on the Kogan Attitudes toward Old People scale revealed a positive attitude toward elderly people.
