Thesis (Ed.D.)--University of Houston, 2004.
Capacity restrictions placed on vocational programs due to limited classroom availability, clinical availability, faculty size, and instructor-to-student ratio dictate the number of students that can be accommodated in nursing schools. When the number of applicants exceeds the available openings, there is a need to ensure that the students with the greatest probability for success are identified for admission. It is necessary to develop admission screening mechanisms capable of predicting the success of applicants. The Texas Academic Skills Program Test (TASP) and COMPASS tests have been used as pre-admission screening tools for the nursing program at San Jacinto College North. However, no studies are currently available to determine if results are reliable predictors of nursing program completion, grade point average (GPA), or a successful outcome on the National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses (NCLEX-PN).

Purpose of the study. The purpose of the study was to identify options for establishing selection criteria to ensure that students admitted in San Jacinto College North's licensed vocational nursing program have a high probability of completing the nursing program and passing the NCLEX-PN. Reading, mathematics, and writing skill level scores derived from the COMPASS or TASP tests were evaluated as predictors of program completion and/or passing the NCLEX-PN. Additional background measures examined were age, gender, GPA, and foreign or American high school graduate status.

The study addressed the following three research questions: (1) Are educational background, age, gender, and GPA variables useful in differentiating program dropouts from the group of students that graduate from the program and sit for the NCLEX-PN? (2) Are entry level skills, as determined by scores on the pre-admission reading, mathematics, and writing tests correlated and useful in differentiating program dropouts from the group of students that graduate from the program and sit for the NCLEX-PN? (3) Are the following student background and skill level variables for program graduates associated with their success on the NCLEX-PN: educational background, age, gender, GPA at graduation, pre-admission Reading score, pre-admission Mathematics score, and pre-admission Writing score?

Results. The findings indicated U.S. educated students were more likely to drop out or fail the program; however, those graduating were more likely to pass the NCLEX-PN. A foreign high school education, preadmission Writing skills, and GPA contributed significantly to prediction of completion of the nursing program. A U.S. high school education, male gender, and preadmission Reading and Writing skill level contributed to success in predicting results of the NCLEX-PN for program graduates.

Implications. This research offers some guidelines for selection criteria to ensure that the limited numbers of openings in the vocational nursing program are filled with applicants that are likely to succeed in completing the program and passing the Licensure exam.
