Miller, Nancy Warren.
Nursing program attrition before and after implementation of a selection point system in an associate degree nursing program.
- 137 p.
Adviser: Chester H. McCall, Jr.
Thesis (Ed.D.)--Pepperdine University, 2003.
The problem this dissertation addresses is the attrition rate from a 2-year, entry-level nursing program. Nursing students who fail or withdraw represent registered nurse positions that go unfilled, student slots that might be filled by successful candidates, and wasted time and dollars by the student, faculty, and community. The purpose of this study is to describe the differences in characteristics of students who withdrew or failed from the nursing program before and after implementation of a point system for selecting applicants. The study also looks at reasons for attrition before and after introduction of the point system.

The study also looks at reasons for attrition before and after introduction of the point system.

The academic records of all 287 students who voluntarily or involuntarily withdrew between 1988 and 2002 were examined. The records of 115 students who entered the nursing program before implementation of the point system for ranking applicants were compared with those of 172 students enrolled afterwards. Data analysis was conducted using descriptive statistics. The characteristics of students who dropped or failed, attrition rates, and reasons for failure and withdrawal are reported as frequencies and percents.

The findings indicate that although the attrition rate increased for classes graduating after implementation of the selection system, academic failure decreased by 15%. Following introduction of the selection system, the most common causes for leaving were general personal reasons (45%), academic failure (31%), wrong career choice (9%), financial problems (7%), family concerns (4%), illness (3%), and professional misconduct (1%). The percentage of males who failed or withdrew increased by 15% after implementation of the point system while the percentage of students younger than 25 years of age decreased 25%. The percentage of students with associate's or bachelor's degrees increased 15% while the percentage of students entering without a college degree decreased 15%. The attrition rate increased 13% for the first semester and decreased 11% in the fourth. Other demographic and academic factors remained essentially unchanged.

The findings indicate that a selection system for ranking applicants may be effective in reducing academic failure. They also suggest that insufficient numbers of support personnel, such as counselors and tutors, may be related to increases in withdrawal for personal reasons.
