Thesis (M.A.)--Royal Roads University (Canada), 2007.
Due to the lack of community members volunteering for the Special Olympics Lakeland, this action research project investigated why people volunteer in their community and provides new volunteers with information that supports them; for example, role descriptions for different volunteer positions and responsibilities of and expectations for volunteers. A qualitative research approach gave the current volunteers an opportunity to explain why volunteerism is important to them and what they feel is important information for all new volunteers to have. Surveys, questionnaires, and interviews were used to gather information throughout the course of this project. Findings included that most of the volunteers were parents of athletes and discussed various reasons for this. This project involved working with members of Special Olympics Alberta, as well as volunteers and the executive councils of affiliates across the province. Data gathered gave rise to findings covering volunteer satisfaction, retention, training, orientation, and barriers.
