Research consists of in-depth interviews with sales clerks and lawyers to illustrate how men and women discuss their work ethic in relation to work, non-work and their bodies. Statistical data from a national probability sample is also used as a comparison to the interviews.

The connection between the work ethic and the body is more evident in women than men. Women interviewed use their bodies to project their work ethic at work. Their bodies project a professional, in-control worker. Men, on the other hand, are less likely to draw connections between a work ethic and their bodies. Therefore, the body is essential for transmitting work values in the workplace for women but not for men.

The emphasis by women on their bodies at work relates in several ways to feminism. Feminism interprets women's bodies as a source of oppression as well as liberation. Women's bodies are the cause of their objectification and their physical differences are the reason they are regarded as inferior to men. At the same time, the body is central to (re)gaining control for women. Women's issues such as rape, abortion, medicine and the media are critical to a feminist interpretation of control and the body. Women gain control of their bodies by first changing their own consciousness and then by using their consciousness to fight larger social and political battles. The body therefore occupies a difficult location in feminist theory. It is both downplayed as a source of difference between women and men, and concentrated upon as a source of control. This ambivalence creates a gap between theory and practice. In practice, feminism can be adopted by women and used as a rational behind a concentration on appearances at work. Thus, female workers interviewed concentrate on expressing control through their bodies but risk losing control of their bodies through objectification.
