How do women emerge as pastors in the Pentecostal/Charismatic tradition? What specific leadership processes contribute to their decision to pursue a life in the ministry as pastors and leaders? These two questions were at the core of this leadership emergence study that focused on identifying core developmental factors experienced by women pastors in the Pentecostal tradition.

The study employed a qualitative research methodology and utilized the case study strategy. It primarily focused on three women who have served as senior pastors of churches that they planted. They are an inclusive and representative cross-section of women pastors from classical Pentecostal denominations to the contemporary charismatic paradigm of the New Apostolic Reformation. Interactive interviews were conducted with each of them and an oral life history constructed. The resulting data were analyzed and synthesized to discover salient factors most crucial to their emergence and entry into ministry.

Through exploring the life journeys of each of these women, I have sought to discover those processes most crucial in their leadership development. The sovereignty and grace of God are readily apparent in each of their lives as He positioned them to take on ministry challenges. However, by the end of the study, seven salient factors that contributed to their development as pastors and leaders had clearly emerged. These were: (1) A theological environment that was accepting of women in ministry, (2) The presence of positive role models and mentors, (3) A sense of destiny or call of God, (4) Power encounters or charismatic experiences that affirmed and enabled them, (5) An understanding (theology) of women in ministry, (6) Affirmation of authority figures and the community of faith, (7) Opportunities for ministry experimentation. Consideration was also given to the contribution and role that family and marriage played in their development. We still stand at the initial stages of discovering how to encourage and enable women to fully respond to the purposes of God for their lives, but through the exploration of these three lives we can see a rough outline of some of the factors that propelled them to pursue a life devoted to serving as pastors and clergy women.
