Thesis (Ph.D.)--Georgia State University, 1997.
This study investigated the effects of the most prevalent type of typically-occurring parent involvement in a preschool early intervention program--that of parents volunteering in the classroom--on the parenting competence and efficacy of low-income mothers. The theoretical basis for this study is found in Bandura's work on social learning theory and self-efficacy which suggests that modeling behavior enhances personal efficacy and improves understanding and knowledge of the behavior being modeled. It was hypothesized that parents who volunteer in classroom activities with their preschool children would significantly improve their parenting competence, their general parenting efficacy and their educational parenting efficacy.

A total of 277 mothers whose children were enrolled in the Ninth District Head Start Program in Gainesville, Georgia participated in this study. A pre- and posttest design was used and data were collected on the classroom volunteer activities of the parents over the course of the 1995-96 school year. Utilizing multiple regression techniques, the results of the data analysis indicated that involvement in classroom activities was associated with significant improvements in the parenting competence and general parenting efficacy of the mothers in the study.
