This retrospective study detailed the demographic profiles of infants/toddlers in a three county area on selected characteristics, including gender, first diagnosis, and gestational age. Additionally, demographic profiles for mothers of these same infants/toddlers were generated for the selected characteristics of race, age at time of birth of the child, educational levels and, county of residence. The relationships of these characteristics between the mothers and the infants/toddlers were also investigated. A data collection period of 12 months for Orange, Osceola, and Seminole counties was employed utilizing Children Medical Services Early Intervention Program raw data collected by social workers at the Arnold Palmer Hospital Developmental Center for Infants and Children in Orlando, Florida.

A total of 545 child and maternal pairs formed the data base for the study. Analysis of child characteristics indicated that the infants/toddlers were predominately male (318/58.3%), with a mean gestational age of 37.19 weeks. The infants/toddlers were born across a range of 22 weeks, occurring from 22 weeks gestation to 44 weeks gestation. The first diagnosis most frequently reported for the infants/toddlers was for developmental delay, followed closely by speech and language disorders. Analysis of maternal characteristics found that the majority of mothers were White, high-school educated residents of Orange County, with mean ages of 28.23 years.
