Thesis (M.S.N.)--Gonzaga University, 2002.
The purpose of this study was to compare the characteristics of men who choose nursing (n = 37) as a profession to those of men who choose other health care professions (n = 36). This study also explored the influence of parents and occupational counselors, and the affects of anticipated role strain on males in these health care professions. Study findings provide information that can be used in efforts directed toward recruiting and retaining men in nursing.

Data were collected via a written survey from registered nurses and men in other care professions. Results from responses to the Bem Sex Role Inventory indicated no differences in personality characteristics between these two groups. Interestingly, RNs were more likely to be categorized as masculine or androgynous than were the men in other health care professions. Parents and occupational counselors had little effect on these males' decision to enter their chosen profession. Both groups identified encountering role strain in their occupations. Ideas for recruitment and retention of males in nursing and ways of decreasing role strain are proposed.
