Procedure. Test scores from 29 symptomatic families in therapy were compared with test scores from a matched group of 29 non-symptomatic families with no history of therapy. Data were analyzed using two-group discriminant function analysis, canonical correlation, and Pearson Product-Moment correlation.

Results. The results demonstrate construct and discriminant validity for Beavers' SFI based on percentages of correct classification of the known groups substantially above chance for the full scale instrument. FACES III had a lower rate of correct classification and was marginally above chance for the full scale instrument. Canonical correlation of the sets of subscales from SFI and FACES III was weak. Pearson correlations of individual subscales reveal moderate to high association between the SFI cohesion subscale and the FACES III cohesion subscale and weak association between the SFI health subscale and FACES III adaptability subscale.

Conclusions. The study concluded that SFI's discriminant ability was superior to that of FACES III and that SFI operationalized the constructs from its theoretical basis--the Beavers Systems Model. FACES III, especially the adaptability subscale, was concluded to be inadequate in operationalizing the constructs of Olson's Circumplex Model.
