In 1995, the Korean government declared an “era of globalization” with the aim of preparing the nation to meet the challenges of an increasingly globalized world. Under this globalization policy, English education has received tremendous attention and has become the focus of reform efforts. The main objective of this study is to determine how and in what ways the government-approved English language textbooks adopted after the educational reforms of 1995 reconcile the dual goals of promoting Korean's global participation and promoting a sense of Korean national identity. Considering the link between globalization and the emergence of English as the predominant international language, language textbooks would seem to be a likely point of departure for researchers interested in tracking the impact of globalization on national identity.

520 $a In developing a methodology for the analysis of cultural content of English language textbooks, this study employs two frameworks, one designed by Michael Byrama and the other by Karen Resager. The applied framework generated from synthesizing Byram and Risager's models consists of four levels of analysis—micro, macro, international and intercultural issues, and interpretative analysis.
520 $a By applying this research framework to the analysis of cultural content of English language textbooks of Korea, this study addresses two potentially conflicting goals of Korea's globalization reforms: globalization and national identity. The results of this study reveal that the 1995 English education reforms may give rise to a perception of global culture as homogeneous and dominated by a White middle class. At the same time, there is evidence that Korea's globalization drive has promoted a new strain of nationalism adapted to the 21<super>st</super> century. The emergence of English in the global market has resulted in the current zeal for learning English in Korea. “English language fervor” in Korea reflects a nation's desire to gain competitiveness and a leadership role in the international community. Thus, this study concludes that Korea's globalization movement as manifested in its English language textbooks can be viewed as a nationalistic drive to project and enact a new Korean national identity. Via Westernization, this distinctly Korean treatment of globalization positions its citizens away from inter-Korean competition and towards the center of the action in the world community.
520 $a In the concluding chapter of this study, some suggestions are provided for language planners and textbook writers in the Republic of Korea with the intention of bringing a critical awareness of culture learning opportunities in the context of foreign language education.
