Thesis (Ph.D.)--The University of Chicago, 2002.
Kerkyra is an island that sits between both modern Greece and Italy and the Ionian and Adriatic seas. Ancient Greeks first settled this island during the eighth century BC, when aristocratic and economic refugees from the Korinthia established a settlement there. Traditionally dated to ca. 735 BC, this settlement soon flourished and developed throughout the Archaic period into an important and prosperous community, most likely because of the commercial activities that passed through its harbours. By the beginning of the Classical period, Kerkyra was economically and militarily one of the most powerful of the Greek city-states; these qualities, combined with the island's geographic position, made its disposition an essential consideration of strategic planning in the frequent military contests of that era. By the end of the period, however, Kerkyra would find itself diminished both in status and in power, when, just as the other city-states of the Greek world, it was unable to compete with the vast resources of the emerging Hellenistic kings and, ultimately, with the state of Rome.

This thesis examines the literary traditions and the archaeological expressions of early Greek society within the island of Kerkyra. It seeks to study the ways in which those in ancient society viewed this early period and the ways in which we understand the same. To do so, it begins with a short discussion of the environment with which the Kerkyraians interacted. From this, the thesis moves to a discussion of the sources and methods of the earliest historians and the accounts that they imparted concerning the foundation of the settlement. A late foundation tradition, that Eretrians had settled the island before the Korinthians, receives focused attention. After these discussions of the ancient literary traditions, the thesis turns to modern historiographical methods, examining archaeological and literary sources for historical information about the origins of the settlement. The thesis then discusses the relationships between the Kerkyraians and the foundations of the subsequent Korinthian settlements in the Greek Northwest during the Archaic period. The thesis closes with a discussion of the use of localising myths in the formation and projection of Kerkyraian identity.
