Shape grammars that generate designs for minimally braced plane rectangular frames are developed. Shape rules that encode the structural principles underlying minimal rigid bracing, safety bracing, and tension bracing problems are specified. Each grammar generatively specifies and graphically represents the solution space of the principle under consideration.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Spatial aspects of the design languages for single, double, and directed double braced frames are explored by encoding not only a structural principle but also an aesthetic principle in shape rules. In particular, bracing designs with symmetry and those in the form of a spiral are characterized formally in a series of grammars. Designs for minimal braced frames based on the 3 x 3 grid and the 3 x 4 grid are enumerated and illustrated in catalogues.
