The increasingly widespread use of computers and the internet have resulted in two significant trends: one, in overwhelming amount of information and imagery is almost instantaneously available to anyone with access to a computer and, two, as machine-interactions take the place of people-interactions and physical experiences continue to give way to computer-mediated experiences, people's concept of reality is becoming further and further removed from the physical. In what ways and to what degree do these developments inform our understanding of transmitting information clearly, efficiently, and effectively?

520 $a My thesis project is an attempt to reaffirm the magazine as a viable and appropriate container of information even in a digital world. The magazine, as a three-dimensional, hand-held construction must be examined in relation to these relatively new information media, but not discarded as a successful carrier of information and potentially powerful mediator of one's experience with that information. Considering the analogy between typographic and physical space, I will design a prototype for a journal whose editorial attitude, article content, and physical form attempt to bridge the fields of architecture and visual communications. This is simultaneously a problem in systems, information design, and visual identity.
