This study attempted to identify unique vocational characteristics of women professional aviators to help attract women to aviation and assist them in entering the aviation workforce.

Professional aviation is a nontraditional occupation for women. In 1994 there were 104,000 working professional aviators in the United States. Only 2,700, or 2.6% were women. Worse, the number of aviators, including women, has decreased by 10% over the past 10 years. The FAA predicts that by 2006 the number of airline passengers will increase by 60%. A shortage of professional aviators now exists and is predicted to increase as airline travel increases. Bringing more women into the aviation workforce is a logical answer to this problem.

The study used the Strong Interest Inventory (SII) and a personal questionnaire to identify vocational interests and personal styles. Forty-one women professional aviators were administered the Strong Interest Inventory and the questionnaire. These women were compared to the General Reference Sample of the SII. They were also compared to the SII occupational grouping of military officers and women physicians and lawyers.

The study determined that women professional aviators possess the unique classification of (a) realistic, (b) artistic, (c) investigative, (d) enterprising, (e) conventional, and (f) social. They are object-oriented rather than people-oriented as determined by their work style. They are highly educated (15.75 years of education) but prefer hands-on training over academia. Their leadership style is by example. On the risk-taking/adventure scale this group scoped significantly higher than the men and women of the general reference sample, the women lawyers and physicians, and the female military officers. They scored higher, but not significantly so, than the male military officers.
