A finger-follower cam system is a planar mechanism, which generates a specified lift motion by rotation of an overhead camshaft. This research uses a high-speed valve train in a current automobile engine as an example to study the dynamic behavior of oscillating finger-follower cam systems and to demonstrate the design techniques developed for this type of mechanism. The main purpose of this study is to explore possible design approaches and to eliminate pathological phenomena existing at high-speed operation of the mechanism.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The major content of this dissertation discusses the design tools developed in this research, including the establishment of a predictive dynamic model, formulation of a lift curve design method, geometric design by numerical optimization, and experimental work on a finger-follower valve train. The dynamic model combines the kinematics of the cam-follower motion and the leak-down behavior of a hydraulic tappet with dynamic equations of the major components in the mechanism. The proposed method of lift curve design solves an optimization problem by the maximum principle and generates design charts with different weighting factors on design criteria. A geometric synthesis method, formulated by extending the envelope theory to irregular followers, makes it possible to search for optimal follower profile by numerical optimization techniques. The experimental study of a finger-follower valve train (utilizing a 1983 Pontiac, Family-II, 1.8 liter, 4-cylinder, overhead cam engine) provides a foundation for the tuning of the dynamic model. These four separate approaches construct a solid package of achieving systematic synthesis of an oscillating finger-follower mechanism

Even though the design concepts and methods are developed for a particular finger-follower valve train, the design techniques can be applied to general cam systems. Instead of providing a detailed and ultimate optimal result of the design problem, this research recommends strategies for using the design tools. Various combinations of the tools are examined and some comparable results are generated
