Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are persistent organic pollutants that biomagnify through food chains. On-site detection of PCBs in soils is presently performed using an immunoassay technique. The occurrence of false negatives and false positives for some sample types in immunoassay has prompted the examination of fluorescence as a potential means to detect PCBs. While PCBs are not natural fluorophores, exposure of PCBs in methanol to uv light results in dechlorination to lower chlorinated congeners which have been identified as tetrachlorobiphenyl, dichlorobiphenyl and monochlorobiphenyl. The resulting solution gives a fluorescence which is linear with respect to concentration down to 20 ppb for various Aroclor mixtures. This photoactivation procedure requires 20 minutes using a hand-held uv lamp.

Analysis of several soils has been attempted using simple extraction into methanol. Sample clean up was then attempted using different oxidizers, taking advantage of the resistance to degradation of PCBs due to changes in pH. Nitric acid, sulfuric acid, hydrogen peroxide, and sodium hypochlorite were among the oxidizers tested. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)
