The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of retirement on household leisure expenditures and to compare leisure expenditures between retired and near-retired households. This study used data from the 1995 Consumer Expenditure Survey. The sample was defined as households whose household heads were at the age of 50 or over, consisting of 2,510 retired and 2,958 near-retired households. The dependent variable was household spending on leisure; and leisure expenditures were analyzed in terms of two categories: active leisure and passive leisure. The double-hurdle analysis was used to measure the effect of retirement on both active and passive leisure expenditures, and the regression analysis was used in analyzing correlates of total leisure expenditures. In addition, tobit analysis with dummy variable interaction technique was employed to test the differences between regression coefficients estimated for retired and near-retired households.

Retirement had a significant and positive impact on total leisure expenditures, which implies that increased preference for leisure in retired households had a direct influence on leisure consumption. Both total expenditures as a proxy for permanent income and the education level of the household head had positive impacts on leisure expenditures. In addition, the influences of the age, race, family type, and presence of specific income sources on leisure expenditures were significant. The results of the dummy variable interaction technique indicated that total expenditures, education levels, age, race, and family type differentially affected leisure expenditures between retired and near-retired households. Leisure expenditures were luxury goods for both retired and near-retired households, and total expenditure elasticity for retired households was greater than that for near-retired households.
