520 $a This study addressing banks' behavior leads to suggesting that a long-term solution to the financial crisis requires Korea to build up its autonomous financial system via a broad institutional restructuring.
520 $a Korean commercial bank operations from 1985 to 1997 are investigated. The objectives are to: (a) compare alternative measures of the elasticity of substitution between input factors (Allen elasticity of substitution and Morishima elasticity of substitution); (b) examine the efficiency of commercial bank operations and look at the effect of government deregulation of interest rates on the efficiency of these operations; and (c) explore how changes in the production behavior of commercial banks respond to changing market and economic conditions. Based on the theory of production, we estimate a system of translog cost equations using cross-sectional and time series data on Korean commercial banks for the period 1985–1997. Unlike earlier studies, this study introduces two separate output variables instead of proxying them with a single output variable. The estimates of coefficients obtained by seemingly unrelated regression (SUR) provide information on elasticity of substitution between factor inputs, cost efficiency, and total factor productivity. The major finding is that deregulation increased the efficiency operation of the commercial banks.
