Thesis (Ph.D.)--The University of Iowa, 2001.
This dissertation examines the negotiation of meaning that occurs in the discourse of intermediate classroom learners of Spanish in synchronous online interactions (i.e., in a computer chat room environment). The purpose of the study is three-fold: First, it examines the nature of the interaction in this type of networked environment using the negotiation of non-understandings model proposed for face-to-face oral communication. Second, it explores differences in the negotiation of meaning in a chat room during the completion of tasks under two conditions: learner-to-learner (NNS/NNS) communication among non-native speakers, and learner-to-native-speaker (NNS/NS) communication. Third, the differences in negotiation are observed under two different task contexts: jigsaw and decision-making tasks. The data for the study consists of transcripts of the interactions, which are based on the communicative tasks designed to elicit specific lexical items in a conversational context.

Results show that the model does indeed hold in the computer-mediated environment, as predicted by other studies. The pattern for negotiation found in the data is very similar for both types of dyads, NNS/NNS and NS/NNS, and there is not a significant difference in the amount of negotiation in these interactions. However, certain aspects of the interactions differentiate the dyads. NSs seem to offer NNSs more corrective feedback and less use of English, the NNSs' L1. Other characteristics of the interactions are explained in terms of the level of proficiency of the learners and the nature of the online medium, which is not spoken nor written. Finally, significant differences in the amount of negotiation triggered according to the type of task were found in the data. These differences are partially predicted by the type of task according to existing typologies, but also by the characteristics of the specific task itself.

Contributions are made by this dissertation to the field of Spanish SLA that may be transferred to studies of other languages. However, further research is needed especially on the issue of the long-term effects of the negotiation work, and of the learners' strategies in the computer-mediated medium.
