This dissertation analyzes the folk toy of India as a cultural resource that reveals the complexity of relationships between creators and consumers within a globalizing society. Unlike in Western societies, where toys primarily function as playthings, in India toys are used in diverse contexts including play, for rituals and festivals, and as props in the performing arts. I employ toys as a lens to examine and interpret the changes in socio-economic and cultural values within contemporary Indian society.

Clay and wooden toymakers trace their lineage from Brahma, the creator of the Universe in Hindu mythology, and claim that their community has been making toys since the birth of the universe. In spite of their interesting profession, many toymakers are giving up their traditional occupations and adopting alternate means of livelihood due to the scarcity of raw materials and shifting consumer appetites.

Through ethnographic research methods such as participant observation, in-depth interviews, and photo-documentation, and participatory research methods such as organizing essay competitions, workshops and discussions on toys at the community level, I explore the world of children to analyze the reasons for the decline of handmade Indian toys. The perspectives of makers and consumers from different generations reveal a range of socio-economic and cultural issues that have affected the clay and wooden toys and made mass-produced plastic toys more desirable. I demonstrate that the impact of globalization on Indian toys is not a new phenomenon, although mass-produced European toys, popular in the last quarter of the nineteenth century, did not displace the indigenous toy industry. Today, the processes of urbanization and free-market trade are transforming the lives of the people and affecting the form, function, and meaning of clay and wooden toys.
