Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Missouri - Columbia, 2002.
This study has examined the relationship between property rights systems and enterprise productivity in rural China by comparing two economic organizations, a village-owned collective (VOC) and stock-sharing cooperative (SSC). The institutional change from VOC system to SSC system has provided a chance for ordinary peasants to participate to some extent in the enterprise affairs. The study shows that the SSC is more effective than that in the VOC in encouraging ordinary peasants to participate in decision-making and supervision processes, to be more concerned for the important matters of their enterprise. The SSC is also more effective than that in the VOC in promoting the morale and harmony of enterprise members. Both qualitative and quantitative research methods have been used to compare the two enterprises. Especially, qualitative and quantitative data are used to illustrate how new organizational arrangements have facilitated the expansion of peasant workers' concern with narrow family interests into a more generalized concern for a collective good of the industrial enterprise.
