The goals of this study are to examine the dimensionality of hardiness and the longitudinal relationships among hardiness, acculturation, stress and psychological distress in Chinese Americans. Eight hundred thirty-five men and 912 women (mean age = 38) completed a 43-item hardiness scale, the Symptom Checklist 90, and scales assessing stress from job hassles, financial hassles, daily hassles, spouse conflicts, family conflicts, and friend conflicts. Assessments were taken at time 1 and eighteen months later at time 2. Responses to the hardiness scale were subjected to confirmatory factor analysis using LISREL 8.5.

520 $a CFA fit indices showed that a three-factor model of hardiness consisting of commitment, challenge and control dimensions fit the observed pattern of correlations. When total hardiness, commitment, challenge and control were entered in longitudinal models, total hardiness accounted for associations between individual hardiness components and other variables, indicating that a hardiness can be modeled as a hierarchical three-factor structure.
520 $a Structural equation modeling was used to examine longitudinal relationships among the variables in separate analyses for men and women. A strong moderating effect of gender was found for most relationships. Although, men and women did not differ from each other in the level of stress each reported from the six sources of stress, women consistently experienced more stable, continuous levels of stress over time compared to men. Stress and psychological distress at time 2 were more strongly related to prior stress and distress at time 1 for women. Hardiness showed weak but consistent effects on psychological distress for Chinese-American men but had no effect on distress for women. Prior psychological distress at time 1 increased stress from spouse, family and friend conflicts at time 2 for women. Women were more negatively impacted by spouse conflicts than men.
520 $a Hardiness increase acculturation over time for both men and women, but the effect was very weak. Acculturation contributed to spouse, family and friend conflicts for both men and women, but contrary to expectations, did not have an effect on job, financial or daily hassles.
