Thesis (Ph.D.)--The University of Western Ontario (Canada), 2002.
The present research program consisted of three separate studies investigating the use of imagery by competitive athletes and the examination of imagery as a form of deliberate practice. The purpose of Study 1 was to examine the influence of competitive level on an athlete's use of imagery in the off-season, and to examine whether imagery use was related to the amount of physical and technical preparation for the up-coming season. A total of 324 athletes from one of three different competitive levels (i.e., regional, provincial and national) participated in this study. Participants were asked to complete a modified version of the Sport Imagery Questionnaire (SIQ; Hall, Mack, Paivio, & Hausenblas, 1998) that was designed to measure an athlete's use of imagery in the off-season. MANOVAs indicated that competitive level differences existed in the athletes' use of imagery in the off-season, as well as in their use of physical and technical preparation for the up-coming season.

The purpose of Study 2 was to examine mental imagery within the context of the deliberate practice framework by investigating competitive athletes' perceptions of the relevance, concentration and enjoyment of performing imagery (Ericsson, Krampe, & Tesch-Römer, 1993). A total of 159 athletes from one of three different competitive levels (i.e., recreational, provincial, and national) completed the Deliberate Imagery Practice Questionnaire, which was designed for Study 2 to assess the athletes' perceptions of the importance of imagery along the three deliberate practice dimensions: (1) relevancy to improving performance and competing effectively; (2) mental concentration; and (3) inherent enjoyment. The results indicated that national level athletes perceived imagery to be more relevant to performing than recreational level athletes. In addition, higher level athletes (i.e., provincial and/or national) imaged more often in a recent typical week, and had accumulated significantly more hours of imagery practice across their athletic career than recreational level athletes.

The third, and final study examined the reliability of using a retrospective recall methodology for providing evidence of deliberate imagery practice. A secondary purpose was to determine which imagery activities constituted the sport specific definition of deliberate practice (Starkes et al., 1996; Young & Salmela, in press). A total of 93 Canadian athletes from one of three different competitive levels (i.e., recreational, provincial, and national) completed the Deliberate Imagery Practice Recall Questionnaire, which was specifically designed for Study 3 to assess the athletes' perceptions and estimated use of 17 different types of imagery activities along the same three deliberate practice dimensions from Study 2. The athletes also completed a one-week imagery diary to assess their actual use of these 17 different imagery activities. The results indicated that the athletes were able to estimate reliably their use of imagery over a short recall interval. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)
