In this study, I draw from psychoanalytic theory, published case studies, and my own clinical material to develop a model of misrecognition and approximation in the course of an infant's development, and to explore the clinical implications of this model. The central hypothesis of this study is that misrecognition of one's own psychic states as well as the approximation of one's sense of coherence in relation to oneself are two conditions that enable states of mind to be passed from one generation to the next without being either digested or metabolized. To support this inquiry, I have included a discussion of the newborn baby's innate repertoire of skills to ensure survival and social interaction. It is these very skills that are vulnerable to misrecognition and misinterpretation. The mechanisms by which an infant develops a sense of himself are explored as well as the notion that forms of misrecognition and approximation can result in psychopathological distortions of a sense of self. Three detailed case examples have been included, followed by a discussion of the clinical implications of a model of misrecognition and approximation. I develop the hypothesis that the therapist is in a unique position to see how misrecognition of an infant's states serves to both ease the parent's anxiety and mislead the infant. As a medium through which communication flows, a therapist can slow down the pace and ask or comment or interpret the interaction. To position oneself in this way is to act as a mirror, seeing the parent and seeing the baby, and reflecting back what one sees. It is important for the therapist to be aware of the totality of the experience of parent and infant: the affects and gestures as well as the spoken words, so that what can be reflected back is as much the whole picture as possible. In summary, when the therapist functions as a mirror and provides a parent with coherence and recognition, the parent is more easily able to examine his relationship to his infant from a similar perspective.
