Partial hospital programs have been shown to provide effective community-based psychiatric treatment. However, these programs have been vaguely defined and differ widely in structure. There has been little research on how effective these programs are with adolescents. Lack of definition and theory have made it more difficult to assess how truly effective partial hospital programs are and with what populations they are most effective. One way to make adolescent partial hospital programs more effective can be to apply theory based on social support and adolescent behavior to these programs. Research based on adolescents shows that specific types of supports have different effects on adolescent behaviors. Family support has been shown to have the greatest effect on adolescent well-being.

520 $a The goal of this dissertation is to provide a clearer definition of adolescent partial hospital programs by providing a current description of programs, identifying goals of these programs, and assessing the efficacy of adolescent partial hospital programs and social supports with behavior problems. Ninety-three surveys were mailed nationally to adolescent partial hospital programs, asking therapists to rate how helpful intervention with social supports (family, peer, school, and community) and partial hospital programs are with specific adolescent behaviors (internalizing, externalizing, and mixed). They were also asked questions regarding goals of their programs and program demographics. Thirty-three completed surveys were received. Results indicate that adolescent partial hospital programs continue to vary in structure. However, goals are more clearly defined. Results also indicate that specific social supports were more helpful with specific adolescent behaviors. Interventions with family support were rated most consistently as more helpful with adolescent behaviors. Partial hospital programs were rated as significantly more helpful with internalizing behaviors than with externalizing or mixed behaviors. All social supports were rated as being generally helpful. This research implies that adolescent partial hospital programs should intervene with services and supports that are most helpful with specific adolescent behavior problems.
