Thesis (M.S.N.)--Wilmington College Division of Nursing (Delaware), 2002.
The National Task Force on the Prevention and Treatment of Obesity (2000) mentions that exercise and a healthy diet are associated with weight loss. In fact, weight loss may be only one of the benefits of enduring physical activity. Other advantages may include psychosocial benefits, such as increased self-esteem (Boyd & Hrycaiko, 1997). Studies have been performed to evaluate the effect of exercise on self-esteem in adolescents, but such research has not been performed with adults (Boyd & Hrycaiko, 1997; Walters & Martin, 2000). Therefore, the purpose of this study was to compare self-esteem levels in two groups of women, one group who exercises and one group who does not, using the Rosenberg Self Esteem Scale (RSES). Results showed there was a slight increase in self-esteem levels from pre-test to post-test. Statistical tests helped to ascertain if there were any associations between the increased self-esteem levels, the demographic variables and exercise. The results of these tests did not support the notion that exercise was responsible for the increased levels of self-esteem.
