The goals of the present study were to assess the convergent and discriminant validity of measures of impulsivity and sensation seeking and their individual associations with various measures of intelligence. One hundred and nine male undergraduates were individually administered six subtests of the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-III, the Sensation Seeking Scale-V, and the Barratt Impulsivity Scale-11. Behavioral measures of the personality traits were also used.

520 $a Although specific hypotheses were proposed, in general, these were not supported by the results. Hypotheses predicting differential performance on IQ subtest scores and estimated Full Scale IQ according to levels of impulsivity or sensation seeking were also mainly unsupported. The exception was a significant negative correlation between the behavioral measure of impulsivity and the Digit Symbol-Coding subtest. This indicated that as working pace increased, time taken decreased, and performance was enhanced.
520 $a The general lack of support for the predictions may be related to sample characteristics. This sample seemed atypical in terms of IQ and impulsivity. Additionally, sample sizes for some analyses may have been small enough that lack of power became a factor, and the new WAIS-III may be less sensitive to personality variables than previous versions.
