Adolescents in this country are at high risk of drinking alcohol, smoking cigarettes, and are at a fairly substantial risk of using marijuana despite societal restrictions on all three behaviors. Data from the 1997 National Household Survey on Drug Abuse (NHSDA) showed that 5.4 million 12 to 17 year olds (23.7%) had used illicit drugs at least once in their lives. More than 7.6 million (34.0%) had at least one alcoholic drink in the past year. Approximately 6 million 12 to 17 year olds (26.4%) smoked at least one cigarette during the year before the survey.

This investigation was a cross-sectional school-based study administered in all nineteen school districts of Delaware. The random sample of both males and females included 1,196 eighth and 1,369 eleventh graders. The relationship between adolescent drug use and the sensation seeking personality factors of (1) disinhibition and (2) thrill and adventure seeking was explored. Motivational reasons for drug use or for abstention of use for alcohol, cigarettes, and marijuana among adolescents were also evaluated. Analytic methods utilized included multivariate logistic regression and Pearson correlation coefficients.

Findings supported the hypothesis that the sensation personality factors of disinhibition and thrill and adventure seeking are major risk factors for substance use among adolescents. Even in multivariate models having additional well documented risk factors for substance use, disinhibition was the most consistent and powerful explanatory variable investigated. In models with only the sensation seeking variables, the ability of disinhibition to account for drug taking behaviors ranged from an odds ratio of 2.8 for eleventh grade alcohol use to 7.9 for eighth grade current marijuana use. The potential confounders of age, gender and race were considered in all analyses. Although all two-way interactions were assessed, none was significant.

Motivational reasons for drug use were found to be similar between males and females. Substance users were most likely to use drugs for the recreational reasons of “getting high,” “feeling good,” and “to relax.” Among the abstainers from cigarettes, alcohol and marijuana, concerns about health were the most frequently chosen deterrents for both grade levels. An important finding was the role of parental disapproval as a deterrent for substance use among eighth graders.

Pearson correlation statistics showed significant associations between disinhibition and many other variables, including measures of perceived risk for drug use. Especially strong correlations were found between disinhibition and an assortment of deviant behaviors. Study findings suggest that disinhibition is a strong index variable for predicting individual likelihood of substance use for teens and could be used to screen for vulnerable youth. The findings from this study may be helpful in identifying adolescents prone to experimentation and heavy use of tobacco, alcohol, and marijuana.
