The purpose of this modified Delphi study was to identify necessary competencies for e-commerce, e-business, and the Internet as they relate to marketing education at the high school and community college level. Two groups of participants, business and industry members partnered with marketing education with strong experience in e-commerce and the Internet and marketing educators from across the nation took part in a web-mailed survey.

Overall, the panel of experts were asked to rate 26 competency statements at two levels, entry-level employment and employment advancement. The panel found 10 statements to be necessary at the entry-level and 25 statements to be necessary at the employment advancement level. Competencies found necessary at both levels include: (1) Write clearly, concisely, and correctly. (2) Create, use, edit, send, read, forward, and attach files for e-mail using proper etiquette and ethics. (3) Develop Internet search skills and strategies. (4) Use the Internet for all types of research and business opportunities. (5) Organize, communicate, and present the results of Internet information in oral or written form. (6) Describe what makes a brick and mortar business successful. (7) Describe e-commerce. (8) Explain and evaluate customer service issues in e-commerce. (9) Describe the many uses of the Internet and e-mail software, and their application. (10) Sell goods/services/ideas online.

This study should help marketing educators best infuse e-commerce skills into the marketing curriculum. Marketing teachers must be made aware of such competencies and able to master such competencies in order to prepare well-educated and employable students.
