Thesis (Ph.D.)--Capella University, 2002.
The relationship between distinct age groups and the level of preparedness for self-directed learning among learners at Northeast Wisconsin Technical College (NWTC) was investigated. The participants in the study were chosen randomly from the entire population of learners majoring in Accounting at NWTC in the fall semester 2001. Participants were randomly assigned to four unique age groups, which included 18–27 year olds, 28–37 year olds, 38–47 year olds, and those learners 48 years of age and older. All subjects completed the Self-Directed Learning Readiness Scale and the researcher compared the mean scores of the four age groups using the One-Way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) procedure. Two very common multiple comparison tests, which included the Tukey and Scheffe post hoc tests, were also employed. It can be concluded that learners who are 48 years of age or older have a higher level or degree of readiness for self-directed learning than those learners 18 to 47 years of age. Additionally it was concluded that gender and learner status (full-time or part-time) are not indicators of preparedness for self-directed learning.
