This study investigated the relationships of collective efficacy, cynicism about organizational change (CAOC), and motivation on the transfer of quality improvement training. The study sought to answer two research questions; (1) Are there any relationships between collective efficacy, cynicism about organizational change (CAOC), motivation, and transfer of training in Thai organizations? and (2) How are they related?

Data were collected through questionnaires administered to participants from five organizations in Nakhornratchasima province, Thailand. These participants had received the 5Ss training sponsored by their organizations. For the first research question, six null hypotheses were tested using the bivariate correlation. For the second research question, the hypothesized model of transfer of training process was tested using path analysis.

Results showed that there were relationships between the transfer of training factors. Collective efficacy, CAOC, and motivation to transfer helped in explaining the transfer of training phenomenon. Participants reported high motivation to use what they learned from training when they perceived that their work groups were collectively capable of performing tasks. They reported application of 5Ss behaviors on the job when they also reported (1) strong perception that the group is collectively capable, (2) less cynicism, and (3) high motivation. They perceived that the intended outcomes occurred when they had actually applied the 5Ss behaviors on the job. Cynicism did not show a direct relationship with motivation. Collective efficacy was shown to be important in the transfer of training process.
